WWE

Championships are part of the show in professional wrestling.  They don’t really tell who the best wrestler is.  They’re there as props or to move the storyline along.  I don’t get upset when my favorite wrestlers win or lose titles cause I know that’s not what it’s about.  That said, the WWE has made a decision recently that I simply cannot understand.

A couple of weeks back, relative newcomer Sheamus pulled an upset and defeated WWE Champion John Cena for the title.  I (like most WWE fans) gave an audible “huh” when this happened.  I’m all for giving young guys… Continue reading

So I’m sitting here on a Monday night doing some work and flipping through the channels.  Actually that’s not quite true.  Normally I tape WWE Raw each and every Monday and get to it throughout the week.  Tonight however was a bit different as both the WWE and TNA had programming on tonight that I wanted to watch: The Monday Night Wars were back!

The TNA show started at 8:00 PM so they got an early start on Vince and crew over at the WWE.  I have to say that the first hour of that show was pretty entertaining. … Continue reading

Years ago there were three major wrestling organizations out there (professional wrestling that is).  The WWE, the WCW and the ECW.  These days two out of those three no longer exist as Vince McMahon’s WWE has taken the top spot in the wrestling world.  For years we had this concept of the “Monday Night Wars” where both WWE and WCW had programming running live against one another on Monday night.

Monday Night Raw, the longest episodic show in history, is the WWE version and has been rolling right along for years.  When the WCW folded it marked the end of… Continue reading

Event: WrestleMania Date: March 31, 1985 Venue: Madison Square Garden (New York, New York) Attendance: 19,121

If you’ve never seen this show before and you’re a fan of modern day WWE stuff the first thing you’ll notice is the production value here absolutely blows.  But don’t judge them too harshly.  First off, this show was 25 years ago and it was the first time something like this had ever been done.

The first voice we hear is Gorilla Monsoon and he’s sitting next to Jesse “The Body” Ventura.  As an old school wrestling fan this is definitely my favorite combination… Continue reading

I’m a big professional wrestling geek… have been for more years that I care to remember.  If you’re a regular 406 reader you already know this.  Pip and I get together every year and build the Beeramid based on that year’s drinking game.  I often tell people that professional wrestling is a soap opera for guys but that’s probably giving it too much credit.  Bottom line is after all of these years I still really enjoy watching it.  Sure I don’t follow it to the extent that I did back in the day but I can tell you that… Continue reading

Before I start this review I wanted to give you my Joe credentials.  While I’m not old enough to have had the 12 inch figures I was fanatical when it came to the Hasbro figures and the original Marvel comic books.  I watched the cartoons religiously and remember like it was yesterday when I saw the animated movie for the first time – Cobra-la-la-la-la-la-la-la!!!  With that out of the way, on to the review.

This will contain spoilers – if you want to know nothing about the movie before you see it skip this post and come back after you’ve… Continue reading

He is “The Excellence Of Execution”.  He is “The best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be”.  He is none other than Bret “The Hitman” Hart.  I have read quite a few wrestling books in my day and I have to say that this one is definitely at the top of the list.

First off, if you’re not a wrestling fan you’re probably not going to get the brilliance of this book.  It’s over 500 pages long and the detail that Bret goes into is just short of photographic memory type recall.  He does… Continue reading

This photo really isn’t all that funny… until you know the circumstances.  The dude with the beer is my buddy Jay.  We were taking in a local WWE show in the Washington area.  We had a few beers – actually, we had more than a few beers.

Jay decided it would be a good idea to put this dude into a headlock and pose for a picture.  Seems reasonable seeing as we were at a “wrasslin” show.  Except for the fact that we didn’t know this guy!  That’s right… Jay is head locking a random here.

I don’t really remember… Continue reading

I’ve been a wrestling fan for probably 25 years now.  I’ve watched the WWF, WWE, NWA, WCW, ECW and a whole bunch of others that are too crappy to mention (GLOW anyone???).  One of my all-time favorite wrestlers is Jake “The Snake” Roberts.  He was never the biggest or baddest in the ring and he never won a major title (at least that I can remember).  But he was the best damn performer that I can ever remember.  He could draw you into a match and really make you hate him (or love him depending on who his foe was).… Continue reading
