Another story from comic legend Alan Moore. Watching this movie I couldn’t help see the similarities with Watchmen (a post “bad shit” look at a city) and recognize just how fucked up Moore really must be. Natalie Portman plays a great role here as does Hugo Weaving (though he’s clad the entire movie in a mask so all you’re hearing is his iconic voice). At times this was a very slow flick but that’s to be expected with an adaptation of Moore’s work. What I will say is I was very much “involved” in the story and there was a very large sense of “How is this going to end?” which is what you’d hope for in a flick like this. There’s actually very little action in this movie and with the exception of the final showdown with V nothing really to write home about. That said, if you’re looking for a very cerebral movie and you’re willing to put in the time this was a very enjoyable experience.

Revenge Of The Ninja (1983)
After putting together my list of Top 80′s Action Movies I decided to add this to my Netflix queue to see if it was as good as I remembered it. If I’m looking at it as a stand alone movie, it’s absolutely fucking terrible. The dialogue is bad and the plot line is worse. However… I absolutely LOVED watching this one again and stand by keeping it on my list. It brought back so many memories and reminded me why I loved ninja movies as a kid. The action sequences are great (though a little hokey) and the final fight scene which lasts nearly 15 minutes is epic. If you’re a fan of old school ninja movies with tons of weapons and some lip syncing thrown in for good measure you’ll enjoy this one.

The Break-Up (2006)
It’s not often that the wife and I agree on a flick, but based on the previews and the case (Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston) we thought this might be one that would work. And it did… for the first 90 minutes or so and then completely fell apart. When you’re watching one of these types of flicks, you’re waiting for the feel good ending. I’ve said many times that I’m a “movie ending” guy. If the flick is great but the ending sucks the flick sucks. So… in a movie called The Break-Up you’re expecting to see the break up, and then toward the end you’re waiting for the reconciliation. Unfortunately in this one, we’re not given the payoff. What we’re left with is some terribly executed “try to be smart” ending that leaves you completely unsatisfied. Too bad too cause Vince, Jennifer and John Favreau give some outstanding performances. (And guys… if you’re a Jennifer fan this is the best I remember her looking in a LONG time… wow). If you’re looking for some giggles watch the first hour and then turn this shit off.

It’s been a while since I’ve done any movie reviews. Hell it’s been a while since I’ve done any posting at all, but that’s another story. Since my last review, I’ve seen a couple of movies and I figured I’d put them in one nice little post. Enjoy!

The King Of Kong – A Fistful Of Quarters
I actually saw this a while ago and just never got around to writing a post about it (damn real life getting in the way). This is a 2007 documentary that tells the story of two men (Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell) attempting to break the world record for Donkey Kong. That’s right… Donkey Kong. The story portrays Wiebe as the “good guy” going after the “bad guy” Mitchell’s record. I’ve played quite a few video games in my days and watching this was absolutely awesome. If you’ve ever played Donkey Kong and remember how damn difficult that game can be you owe it to yourself to check this one out. Regardless of if you think gaming is a legitimate activity you can’t deny how much work goes in to being a great DK player. Check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

Live Free Or Die Hard
This is a great little action movie. Unfortunately it’s not really a Die Hard movie. Sure it’s got John McLane in it, but that’s about where the comparisons to the original trilogy end. I guess I feel the same way about this one as I did with the remade Friday the 13th – it was a good horror movie, just not a Friday movie. This time around, McClane is dealing with a group of virtual terrorists who have managed to “take down the grid” so to speak. Conceptually this is actually pretty damn cool, especially if you’re a techno geek like me. As with the other Die Hard flicks you really need to suspend disbelief when you start watching this (McClane takes out a helicopter with a truck… don’t ask) but once you get past that stuff it’s really quit enjoyable. Bruce Willis gives a fine performance as do Justin Long (the Mac guy from the Mac/PC commercials) and Timothy Olyphant (of Deadwood and Hitman fame). The cast is rounded out nicely with some folks that you may or may not have heard of complete with a small part by one of my favs Kevin Smith. Go into this understanding what it is (a popcorn movie) and what it really isn’t (a Die Hard movie) and you’ll have a good time.

Avatar
Going into this flick I figured any movie that had made a BILLION dollars and was like 10 years in the making had to be good. Unfortunately I was wrong. Let me start out by saying that this movie looked absolutely AMAZING. I was lucky enough to see it in IMAX 3D and I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that 10 years from now when we look back and what 3D technology has become, we’re going to point to this movie as the one that started it all. I’ve got to give James Cameron huge props at having a vision and seeing it to fruition. As for his story telling ability it left quite a bit to be desired. The best way I can describe this is Dances With Wolves meets The Matrix. If that seems like a weird mix of plots, it’s cause it is. I actually fell asleep during the first 30 minutes or so and didn’t miss a damn thing story line wise. If you can still catch this one in a theater in 3D then I’d recommend you do so simply so you can see the beauty that’s on screen, but if you’ve missed it and your only opportunity is on DVD then it’s a definite pass.

Hot Tub Time Machine
Had a chance to see this when Pip was in town. Being a child of the 80′s I was interested to see how they’d handle that decade and I’m happy to say that they nailed it (at least in my memory). This certainly isn’t a “good” movie by any stretch of the imagination, but I have to tell you that I chuckled the whole way through. The cast that I thought would be suspect works really well together. John Cusak in probably my favorite roll since Gross Pointe Blank plays the lead, Craig Robinson (of The Office fame), Clark Duke (Kick Ass) and Rob Corddry in a show stealing performance as Lou round out the cast nicely. In addition, there are some great 80′s cameos (William Zabka… if you’re a kid of the 80′s and you don’t know that name shame on you), Chevy Chase and Crispin Glover. All of this PLUS, if you’re a Cleveland Browns fan and “The Drive” still bothers you… well, I’ll just say you need to check it out.

Kick Ass
I’ll get the pun out of the way… Kick Ass kicks ass!!! Being a comic geek I’m always somewhat worried when these things come to the big screen (though there have been some damn good comic movies in the last couple of years. I was not familiar with this story going into it and boy was I blown away. This is an edgy and dark story about a normal guy that decides to be a superhero. No special powers, no utility belt… just a desire to do something that other people won’t. He learns along the way that he’s not the only person who’s had this idea and meets up with Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his daughter Hit-Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz). While this is a comic book film, it’s in the same style as the darker comic flicks we’ve been given lately – Dark Knight, Sin City, etc. This is a very violent movie and definitely not for kids but as an adult DAMN was it a good time!

Being that I’m a comic nerd and a fan of assassin movies I’m pissed that it took me so long to get to this one. I’ve never read the comic that this flick is based on but I figured that wouldn’t be a problem as it’s “loosely” based on the book from what I hear.

Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is stuck in dead end job that he hates. His world changes when he’s told that his long lost father was actually one of the best assassins the world has ever seen. In addition to learning that his father has been murdered he is recruited into a secret society of assassins called The Fraternity. The Fraternity includes members Fox (Angelina Jolie) and Sloan (Morgan Freeman).

During his initiation and training, Gibson essentially gets the shit beat out of him but becomes a deadly killer able to make every shot and even bend bullets in mid flight. Wesley’s life takes a turn for the worse when The Fraternity flips on him and makes him the target.

This is a comic book movie through and through. You REALLY have to suspend disbelief here to get into it, but there’s some outstanding effects in here. The concept of “bending” a bullet is kind of hokey but to see it on screen is super cool. Some of the kill shots in here are right up there with the best I’ve seen on film. There are quite a few plot holes in here but if you can get past them this is a fun little flick.

I’m glad that I didn’t pay full price to see this one in the theater, but I’m also glad that I’ve seen it. If you’re looking for a good little action movie this is a thumbs up rental. If you’re not a comic fan or a fan of assassin movies I’d probably pass.

Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) " width="250" height="370" />Before I start this review I wanted to give you my Joe credentials. While I’m not old enough to have had the 12 inch figures I was fanatical when it came to the Hasbro figures and the original Marvel comic books. I watched the cartoons religiously and remember like it was yesterday when I saw the animated movie for the first time – Cobra-la-la-la-la-la-la-la!!! With that out of the way, on to the review.

This will contain spoilers – if you want to know nothing about the movie before you see it skip this post and come back after you’ve seen it.

If you’re like me you heard very bad things about this flick. I heard that it was the worst previewed movie in history, that the director had been fired halfway through, that they weren’t going to allow official movie reviews, etc. Since most people are going to go into it with the “it sucks” mentality I’ll start off with the bad stuff.

THE BAD STUFF

The CGI – it’s fucking terrible. There are quite a few times where it’s was so bad that it took me out of the movie. Planes don’t fly accurately, characters do shit that wouldn’t be remotely possible (even when you suspend disbelief) and there are some scenes where you can almost see the green screen technicians standing in the background.

The outfits – not so great. I can’t really put my finger on it but the Joes just don’t look “authentic”. They’ve got a Starship Troopers look to them… if that makes any sense. The military folks in The Transformers look much more realistic.

Cobra – so the movie is called “The Rise Of Cobra” and you don’t get much of that until the last minute of the movie. Should have/could have done more.

THE CHARACTERS

Snake Eyes – Ray Park is a bad ass and he looks great with one exception – he’s got a mouth. Terrible. Looks nothing like the original character and there’s not even a “movie” reason for the change. Not good.

Baroness – SMOKIN. Sienna Miller is incredible in this role and looks amazing. I’ve always thought of Baroness as a bit “matronly” and there was none of that here. I didn’t dig her back story but I can deal with it.

Duke – really looked the part but I’ve always thought of Duke as an “older” Joe. Every time Channing Tatum was on screen I couldn’t help think of WWE superstar John Cena.

Destro – you don’t see him plated until the end which is fine. The actor is a little too thin for my liking but definitely plays the cerebral Destro to perfection.

Ripcord – I really thought Marlon Wayans would get on my nerves. He didn’t. Well done Marlon.

Scarlett – PERFECT casting. Rachel Nichols captures her character and plays her to a T. Oh… and she’s HOT!

Storm Shadow – I preferred the comic version where you didn’t know really who he was and rarely saw him out of ninja gear but I’ve got no problem with this treatment.

Hawk – Dennis Quaid was a perfect choice for Hawk. Not a big role in this flick but needed an actor that could pull it off.

Heavy Duty – bad choice of an actor. Based on his appearances in Lost and Oz I just couldn’t see Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje in this role.

Breaker – I’ve got a certain affinity toward this character as he was my first ever figure. I’m not a huge fan of changing him from American to Moroccan but I was happy with the way he was portrayed.

Cobra Commander – what… the… fuck. The back story is wrong, the outfit is terrible and for a flick called “The Rise of Cobra” he’s got no screen time. You simply cannot have Cobra Commander without the faceplate or the hood. Awful.

Zartan – happy to see him in the film and REALLY looking forward to what they do with his character in the sequel. Nothing like the comic/figure but that was to be expected.

THE GOOD STUFF

Action – make no mistake – this is an action movie. It’s not a retelling of the comic and it’s certainly not the “made for TV nobody gets shot when there’s a milion bullets flying” stuff that you got with the cartoon. The Paris sequence is great and the attack on the Pit was a treat to watch.

Nostalgia – I’ve been waiting for this flick for nearly 30 years. To finally see the Joes on the big screen was awesome. I was naturally comparing it to the cartoon/comics but I can honestly say that I was completely entertained the entire way.

The origins – I’ve said a couple of times that I don’t like the back story that they’ve given the characters. This is partially due to MY history with the characters so I can overlook that. That said, this doesn’t feel like an “origin movie” which it clearly is. The story moves along quite well and the back stories are told through a series of flash backs in a way that doesn’t detract from the plot.

The setup – based on the limited previews that I saw I thought I’d hate the storyline for this flick (what the hell is a nano-mite anyways?) I was pleasantly surprised that I really found myself caring about the plot. The ending was tight and totally left some great jumping off points for a sequel.

RECOMMENDATION

In a previous post I bitched about how my childhood was being raped. Honestly I’m really happy to finally see this flick on the big screen. I can understand why there have been a slew of negative reviews but if you’re a child of the 80′s like me I’m guessing you’re going to enjoy watching this. Go into expecting the same characters and plots that you got in the 80′s and you’ll be disappointed. Go into expecting a fun popcorn action movie and you’ll be happy. Recommended movie for fans of the G.I. Joe universe. I was able to overlook the bad stuff and walked out of the theater entertained and looking forward to more G.I. Joe and Cobra.

It’s summertime and that means blockbuster movies of the week! Last night at midnight, the sequel to Michael Bay’s Transformers hit the big screen. Already this morning the movie is being absolutely slammed in reviews. It’s being called slow, plodding, etc. And I can’t wait to see it!

For those that don’t know, The Transformers are robots that morph (transform) into vehicles and other objects to blend in to their surroundings. The property first came to us in the mid 80′s as a cartoon and has since spawned three (as of last night) theatrical releases, comic books, toys and and episodic television show. I’m a child of the 80′s. I lived for the Transformers. It was my favorite show to rush home from school to watch. I had the toys, I went to the movies, I pretended to be my favorite characters. That’s why I’m going to this movie… cause I have great memories of this franchise and Michael Bay knows it.

The first movie had its flaws for sure. I couldn’t tell what was going on when robots were fighting other robots. The human dialog was kind of sappy. I wasn’t a big fan of the hand held camera views. But you know what? I loved it! I loved the fact that these robots from my childhood were being brought to life on the screen. I loved the fact that Megan Fox is in there (just cause I think she’s completely beautiful). I loved the fact that it didn’t try to be anything but what it was – a balls to the wall action movie. Many of the reviews of Revenge Of The Fallen that I’m reading are bitching about those same things. If I could get past them in the first film I’m sure I’ll be able to get past them in the second.

Transformers isn’t the only 80′s franchise that’s going to get my money this summer. G.I. Joe is getting a big screen treatment of its own later this summer. I’ve been excited about seeing a live action G.I. Joe flick for years and ever since the first trailer showed up during the Super Bowl this year I’ve been counting down the days.

Unfortunately the early reviews of G.I. Joe – The Rise Of Cobra have not been good. Reports of the worst test screening in the history of the studio, fired directors, rewritten scripts, etc. have been circulating for a while now. All I can tell you is this: the trailer was awesome and I’ll be there when this one hits the theaters. G.I. Joe (like The Transformers) defined who I was when I was growing up in the mid 80′s. I remember going to the theater to see the original G.I. Joe movie and wondering what the hell Cobra-La was.

These movies get made for one reason: Money. The movie houses KNOW that there are folks out there like me that will flock to the flicks no matter what kind of garbage is put to screen. Throw in a couple of toy lines to hook the younger kids and you’ve got yourself a billion dollar property.

This geek simply can’t wait. Autobots… roll out! Yo JOE!!!

It seems that Hollywood is all about the comic book movie these days. Just this year alone we’ve been given Watchmen and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Unfortunately I haven’t had the opportunity to see either of these yet but I definitely will. That said, here’s a list of my favorite comic book movies!

The Crow (1994) – My favorite comic movie of all time. So dark… So creepy and it was relatively true to the book. Rest in peace Brandon Lee. You were on the cusp of greatness.

X2: X-Men United (2003) – the intro scene alone was awesome but when you throw in the “storming of the castle” scene this is comic book genius. I have yet to see the newest Wolverine movie but from what I’m hearing I doubt it’s going to be on this list and certainly not this high.

Batman (1989) – Staring Michael Keaton (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Jack Nicholson (The Joker), Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl and Jack Palance, Batman was the first big comic book movie in years and was the first film treatment of the character since 1966′s Batman: The Movie. The hype for this movie was absolutely incredible and the flick certainly didn’t disappoint.

Superman (1978) – By far my favorite “origin” movie and aside from the whole “spin the Earth to turn back time” shit a nearly flawless flick in my book. To this day Christopher Reeve IS this character. His portrayal of the icon was superb.

The Dark Knight (2008) – aside from the damn voice that Christian Bale does when he’s suited up he’s an outstanding Batman. I think he’s definitely the best I’ve ever seen at playing the “playboy” that is Bruce Wayne. Heath Ledger was absolutely incredible in his portrayal as the Joker. He brought an “edge” that Nicholson didn’t have. Full review here.

Honorable Mentions:

The Punisher (2004) – Thomas Jane played this role very well I thought. Travolta completely overacted a non-comic character but in the end I enjoyed that character as well.

Spider-Man 2 (2004) – When I first saw this I thought it was hands down the best comic movie I’d ever seen. I recently re-watched it and found quite a few flaws that I’d missed but it’s still damn good. The fight between Doc Oc and Spidey is one of the best put to film. Full review here.

Iron Man (2008) & Watchmen (2009) – I have yet to see these flicks. If what I’ve heard is true they’ll most likely make their way into the top 5.

This was the third Spider-Man film directed by Sam Raimi and it had the potential to be awesome. Unfortunately the potential was never realized. There are definitely some parts of this movie that are great – in fact there are some scenes in here that are by far my favorites of the Spider-Man “trilogy” but there are others that are pretty much unforgivable. Please note I’ll have MAJOR SPOILERS in this review. If you haven’t seen it and want to be surprised stop reading. You’ve been warned.

PLOT:

Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) finally got his shit in line. He’s working regularly, got a steady girlfriend (Kirsten Dunst reprises her role as Mary Jane Watson) and had even managed to keep his other life of Spider-Man in line with the rest of what’s going on. At the end of Spider-Man 2, Harry Osborn (James Franco) finds out who Spider-Man is and takes up his father’s goal to kill the spider as The New Goblin. Peter finds out that the real killer of his uncle Flint Marko (Thomas Haden Church) has just escaped from prison. Through a series of events Marko becomes The Sandman. On top of all of this, Peter discovers a symbiotic entity that we all know as Venom.

REVIEW:

If it sounds like a quickly thrown together plot review it’s cause it is… and that’s exactly how the movie felt. There’s simply too much going on to come across on screen in a good way. Essentially you’ve got 3 bad guys here where the flick simply doesn’t need them. Tell the story with Sandman, tell the story with The New Goblin OR tell the story with Venom — but please don’t try to do all three. You could probably have gotten by with a Sandman/Goblin story but to throw Venom in there is just too damn much. The result is three back stories that aren’t told very well and it leaves you scratching your head and wondering why you should even care about these characters.

THE GOOD STUFF:

As I said before, there’s some awesome stuff in here as well. The special effects are incredible. All the scenes with Sandman (aside from the first one) are perfect. The character himself is a little over the top so you have to suspend disbelief a bit but seeing him “grow” is awesome. Sand is such a fluid medium and it’s captured really well here. Venom is great as well. I’m not keen on the scenes where the mask “pulls back” to reveal Eddie Brock (Topher Grace) but the suit itself is great and how it “crawls” is awesome.

The scene at the end where Spidey and Goblin are working together is awesome. It’s fast, they move through the screen quickly and the action is intense. This is actually right up there for me with the Spidey/Doc Oc fight in Spider-Man 2. Actually, now that I think about it there’s another scene with these two that’s awesome as well. Right off the bat there’s a fight between these two that really gets the action going well. Intense and actually moves the plot along (with Harry suffering an injury that keeps him out of “Goblin mode” till much later in the movie. I think this was necessary based on the fact that they had so much crap shoved in there. Just goes to show you that there’s just too much.

THE BAD STUFF:

OK, here’s where things fall a part a bit. First off, the Goblin looks like a damn snowboarder. What the hell??? I made reference to how bad the Goblin’s outfit was in the original Spider-Man film. I guess bad fashion sense just runs in the Osborn family.

Speaking of the Osborns… they’ve got the world’s best butler apparently cause toward the end of the film he sweeps in to save the day. He explains to Harry that Spider-Man was not in fact the cause of his father’s death and that Harry shouldn’t hold him accountable. A little piece of information that would have been important BEFORE Harry got a huge scar on his face, nearly killed Peter and put Mary Jane in jeopardy. Fucking butler.

This is small one, but it’s really irritating just cause I thought it was so cool. In Spider-Man there is a throw away line where someone makes reference to “Eddie” which is an obvious reference to Eddie Brock. Then in this flick, the introduce him as a brand new photographer. Just goes to show you what happens when a throw away line is thrown away. Bummer.

THE GAY STUFF:

OK for all of the stuff that I loved and all of the stuff that I could forgive here’s where this one just falls off the track. Toward the end of the film you’ve got Venon, Sandman, Goblin and Spider-Man all going at it in an epic battle. Venom dies (which is tragic cause he’s such a cool character and they really didn’t do shit with him in this movie). The Harry/Goblin gets impaled and they’ve got a 5 minute scene where Harry, Peter & Mary Jane are boo hooing about it. Harry and Peter have an “I love you man” moment before Harry dies. If there weren’t enough for you, Marko comes back and at the very end of the story introduces this whole idea of how he was stealing for his daughter and that he really didn’t MEAN to kill Uncle Ben, etc. Peter figures he’s already been weepy enough so might as well shed some more tears and tell Sandman that he forgives him and allows him to walk away a free man. Um, OK. First off, the whole reason he became a crime fighter was based on Sandman’s actions… now that he’s got him he just lets him walk? And he’s indirectly responsible for his “best friend’s” death… and he just let’s him walk? Enough said.

RECOMMENDATION:

There’s some good stuff in here and some really bad stuff. If you’ve watched the original and Spider-Man 2 then you owe it to yourself to see the “conclusion” but if you’re looking for a great Venom story you’re just not going to get it. Also note that this is probably not the last Spidey story to be put to film… Spider-Man 4 is slated for 2011.

Origin movies are generally pretty dry. They have to tell the back story of the character to make sure that everyone is up to speed. This movie suffers a little bit from that but it’s one of the best first installments of a comic book character that we’ve had in a long time.

Written by comic legend Stan Lee and directed by Sam Raimi, Spider-Man tells the story of Peter Parker (played perfectly by Tobey Maguire). Parker is a teenager coming of age who happens to be bitten by a radioactive spider on a school field trip. After that fateful day, the story follows Peter’s transformation from a bumbling, awkward teen into Spider-Man: a vigilante crime fighter who’s out to save the world from evil.

The main villain is a Spider-Man staple: Green Goblin / Norman Osborn played to near perfection by Willem Dafoe. Dafoe’s performance is outstanding… his voice is great for the role and he shows off the intellect that makes the Goblin more than just a super-powerful bad guy.

Every great hero needs to have a love interest. Here it’s a character named Mary Jane Watson played by Kirsten Dunst. There’s not a whole lot to the performance here. She looks good and does a decent job in the role. The relationship between Peter and Mary is quite a bit different in the movie than it was in the comics but you’ve got to expect some of that when a book is transferred to the big screen. The one great moment in the film that contains Watson is the one that has been shown over and over in clips… Spider-Man has just saved Mary Jane from a group of thugs and hangs upside down in an alley and they kiss. Sounds stupid but it’s pretty intense on screen.

A couple of other characters that need to be mentioned:

James Franco as Harry Osborn – Harry is the son of Green Goblin / Norman Osborn who is Peter Parker’s best friend and boyfriend of Mary Jane Watson.

Rosemary Harris as Aunt May Parker – I’m not a big fan of this character in the Spider-Man universe but Ms. Harris does a very admirable job with her.

Cliff Robertson as Uncle Ben Parker – delivers a recurring line in the series, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Unfortunately at the time its delivered it has nothing to do with Peter being Spider-Man.

J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson – the editor-in-chief at the Daily Bugle where Peter works as a freelance photographer. He delivers some of the best lines of dialog in the entire movie.

Randy “Macho Man” Savage as Bone Saw McGraw – Randy plays a professional wrestler. Not too much of a stretch but cool to see him regardless.

A COUPLE OF COOL THINGS:

I’m a big comic book fan and even a bigger fan of comic book movies. The key to a good (I.E. financially successful) comic book movie is to have enough content in there for the comic book geeks out there but not too much that you alienate the non-comic fans. Two super cool references make it in here:

Stan The Man – Stan Lee makes an appearance in just about every Marvel based movie. You can see him here in the fair scene where the Green Goblin blows up town.

Eddie Brock reference – in what seems like a throwaway line of dialog someone at the Bugle makes a reference to how “Eddie” has been trying to get a good shot of Spider-Man for weeks. This is an obvious reference to Eddie Brock who will show up in Spider-Man 3 as Venom.

I think just about everyone on the planet knew that a sequel to this was coming. The way they set it up was very nice… at the very end of the flick Mary Jane kisses Peter and at the last moment before the camera pans away from her she gets a look of recognition when she realizes that the man she just kissed is in fact Spider-Man. This isn’t addressed at all in this film which leaves things open for the next installment.

A COUPLE OF “SCRATCH YOUR HEAD” THINGS:

This movie certainly wasn’t without its faults. It’s far from perfect even for a comic movie.

Aunt May delivers the following line when she’s talking to Peter: “You do too much – college, a job, all this time with me… You’re not Superman, you know.” At first this is a “ha ha” moment until you think about it for a second. Spider-Man is a Marvel character. Superman is a DC character. Not a huge deal for non-comic fans but one of those things that rubs THIS comic geek the wrong way.

There’s a scene in the movie where Spider-Man saves a small child from a burning building. At first glance there’s nothing out of place here… until you realize that the mother of the child is OUTSIDE THE BUILDING screaming for Spider-Man to save her baby. Um, huh? As a parent I can guarantee that I’m never leaving the house without my kids… especially a newborn. Just kind of takes you out of the scene.

I made reference earlier to Willem Dafoe’s near perfect portrayal of the Goblin. The one big bitch I’ve got about that character isn’t even his fault… he looked like a mix between a Power Ranger and a Voltron character. Absolutely terrible outfit.

RECOMMENDATION:

Origin movies tend to be slow because they have to set up a ton of back story. Luckily Spider-Man’s back story is pretty simple… it’s a dude that gets bit by a spider. There’s plenty of action here for the non-comic fan and the story is true enough to the original that the comic geeks will be satisfied. It’s a good beginning to a worthy franchise. If you haven’t seen it yet I’d urge you to do so.
