I've reference my favorite podcast "The Geek Savants" on several occasions on this blog. I'm totally stoked to report that on their latest episode the Savants gave their take on this very post! Check out the episode here: http://thegeeksavants.podbean.com/2009/09/06/episode-131-desperately-seeking-nude-scenes/ You'll be glad you did!

NOTE: After reading this over again I realize I've made a mistake. In the FINAL THOUGHTS section of the post I reference the fact that Ghostbusters has two mentions on the list... but it doesn't. I had in my mind to add Peter Venkman as Bill Murray's alternate (as Ugly points out here). Further evidence that that choice was VERY close in my mind.

Ugly - yes. This list is just my "who do you think of first". Certainly not to say that these actors don't have other incredible roles. Totally agree with you on Venkman (would have been another honorable mention if I chose to include more than one per actor).

One that I didn't include (cause quite frankly I couldn't think of an Honorable Mention) was Christopher Reeve. Dude IS Superman.

chewie, I might disagree with a lot of your list..but I might be confused.. are you saying these are the characters you immediately think of when you hear these names?
Harrison ford is han Solo, and Dr Jones.. but he has also been jack Ryan and the President in air force one...
Bill murray also has Peter Venkman
Sean Connery has his charatcer from Untouchables (which he won an academy award)
Marlon Brando is On the Waterfront
Heath ledger had Brokeback Mountain
Tom Hanks has tons.. including Woody from Toy Story

Sigourney and Hammill are the only ones I pretty much associate with those characters. Ripley and Skywalker

Newman had too many also.. cool hand luke, fast eddie felson, butch cassidy, etc...

it is an interesting topic though, cause a lot of actors can never escape the role that made them famous.

Jeff - what can I say... I'm a HUGE Superman fan. Agree with you though that Apocalypse and Waterfront were outstanding performances. This was just the first 10 that came to mind. Looking back I'd definitely have Newman (The Sting) and Redford (The Natural) on the list as well.

You still in Indy?

Chewie, it pains me that a movie buff like you would give Brando's honorable mention to Jor-El... His 30 minutes or so in apocalypse now trump that. Even more so is his turn in On the Waterfront, cinema iconography to say the least. Agree on Ford and Murray... Sad to see no mention of Paul Newman who literally defined every role he was ever in.

P.S. Cleveland Sucks!
